This week instead of listening to the new releases I've got lined up, I thought I'd go back into the past and dig up something 2012 instead. I've been a big fan on 'NNNNNNNNNN' ever since seeing him play Calmdownkidda's 'ChipFest', his dubstep style was extremely polished. 'Cosmic Lovely Lovely' was NNNNNNNNNN's first album and immediately you could tell there was something promising. All tracks show a full array of tricks & techniques, however one track that shines the most of the album is the heavy as fuck, 'Wanker Harder'.

Cosmic Lovely Lovely by NNNNNNNNNN

It is an excellent song about how someone can put heavy dubstep into 8bit form. 'Wanker Harder' instantly begins with a heavy riff right off the bat, immediately showing NNNNNNNNNN's talent with the WAV channel. We then go to a light melody, something 'NNNNNNNNNN' likes to put into a lot of his tracks. The style resembles an odd likeness to that of a punchy, jazzy piano due it's tightness and rhythmic nature. It then builds further, getting more and more until the crescendo peak, where we hear the ominous, gritty voice of WAV channel, ferociously pounding both the left and right speakers.

So much can be heard going on during this time, it is hard to believe that this was single handedly created on one gameboy. Both the wav and pulse channels are used to their fullest potential, the woops and wamps crafted and played so rhythmically that they flow perfectly between one another.

'Wanker Harder' is a rare example of taking a genre outside of chiptune and giving it the 8-bit treatment. Although there is some chipstep/dubstep songs I have heard, nothing comes close to NNNNNNNNNN's take on the genre.

'Cosmic Lovely Lovely' was NNNNNNNNNN's first release, however it immediately showed full potential and is a must listen to anyone in the chiptune community. Here's to hoping he releases more material soon!

We're looking at another release from an artist based in Japan. 'SI' by 'SunamachiSoundSystem' (砂町サウンドシステム) is a new album, released on record label, 'Estra'. Instead of using the most typical chiptune hardware, 'SI' was made using an old machine called, 'The Elektron Monomachine', which utilises various different bit hardware, such as the 'SID chip' (commonly found in the C64) and 'FM synth.' Both minimalistic but flowing with style, 'SI' feels like an exciting journey through space, with the variety of fat and thick melodies rolling off each track.

[ESC-009] SI by 砂町サウンドシステム

A good example of all this can be found in my favourite track off the album, 'Respond to Bhagawarn' (バガヴァーンこたえる). It begins very simple, starting off with a very tight set of drums. This is in return is complimented with some fat, warm keys that shimmer and shine. New instruments are then brought to the table, such as the lowly squarewave that echoes out whilst an arpeggio rolls forth. With all this together the songs almost feels as if we're happily floating in space, looking down at earth and trying to spot any life occurring.

'Respond to Bhagawarn' is a lovely track to listen to, as it feels almost euphoric, with each tone and sound ringing out, whilst the laid back beat just plods along. It is also a great example what Sunamachi Sound System's style is using the Mono Machine, and what else lies in on the album 'SI'.
Hello, how are you all doing today? This week I'll be reviewing a very interesting album called, 'Tribal Rock' by, 'Kosmic Tantra' and it's an incredible selection of tracks to say the least. To give you context, 'Kosmic Tantra' are a french 3 person electronic rock band, consisting of a variety of different unique instruments; from the staple gameboy running LSDJ, to the more abstract, Didgeridoo and Accordion. Yes, you heard that right; throughout the entire run time of the album you'll be hearing amazing 'Eastern outback instruments' whilst chiptune & electronic music are used as the backbone of each track. A first for the genre, I think!

Tribal Rock by Kosmic Tantra

We begin with the title track, 'Tribal Rock' and it immediately opens up with the 'Akai Rhythm Wolf' drum machine blasting out with its analogue sound. Whilst the drums fill the background, all kinds of sounds are played, from 'nanoloop 2' used as the synth and percussion, to what I suspect is the Pocket Operator 12 drum machine being used as the fills. As we go further through 'Tribal Rock', more instruments are added such as the staple guitar, laying down some rocky licks and giving the song the flavour it needs. We then have the more abstract instruments center forward, like the Jaw Harp, a metal Lamellephone used throughout history amongst asian and western cultures. Let's not forget the didgeridoo either, as this provides provides the heavy bass in some parts, like the bridge whilst the guitar plays melodies.

Just reading off all instruments I've listed here, you wouldn't think that 'Tribal Rock' would work actually work as a track, but like most original & unique songs, it proves us wrong and then some! Each instrument serves a different purpose and has been mixed well as to avoid any clashes, allowing them to come through crisp as well as being distinctively easy to point out.

Tribal Rock by Kosmic Tantra

From 'Tribal Rock', we move on to the next track, 'Purple River', a song which ups the ante of the psychedelic genre. It begins with the synth of Nanoloop playing whilst LSDJ percussion is playing in the background. This is then broken up by the hard didgeridoo, which acts as both the bass and the hook. Finally to top it off, the guitar and drums come in, with the guitar playing a wild screaming hook, the sound created with a Digitech Whammy Pedal. This essentially increases the pitch of the sound by various increments of an octave, allowing for a higher, more thrilling sound. I really love 'Purple River' and how it manages to weave all the sounds just like the former track, 'Tribal Rock'. However, unlike the former track, 'Purple River' goes miles ahead in it's energy & structure. 'Tribal Rock is a great tune, however 'Purple River' creates more of an impact with its face melting guitar riff, which is extremely high in energy.

Tribal Rock by Kosmic Tantra

The final track I'm highlighting, is the third song, 'Why So'. Whilst it's very similar to the other tracks reviewed, 'Why So' focuses more on using the Akai MPC 1000, a vintage sound sampler. We start off hearing the sampler smash out some spacey sounds whilst effects from the MPC trickle out. Like 'Purple River', 'Why So' manages to build up a lot of energy, utilizing particular instruments to their full potential. It also feels very philosophical thanks not to just the echo-y sounds, but also the sampled english words, 'Why' and 'So', giving a sort spiritual feel to the whole song.

It was fun listening Kosmic Tantra's 'Tribal Rock', and the fact that they went to the extra mile to utilize old hardware & wind instruments, it makes the album that much more unique and appealing. However it's that more shocking to find out that I'm the only supporter of the release! If you enjoyed any of these songs, please give 'Tribal Rock' the support it needs. It's albums like this further experiment with chiptune that need to be noticed.

This week I'm taking a break from my stock of nanoloop albums to review something that I believe has gone under people's radars. 'ピクセルワールド EP' or more known as, 'Pixel World EP' is by a 5 piece Japanese electronic band, known as 'Inabano Gakudan'. Inabano's music is a mixture of both hyperpop and chiptune, with the genres crossing over with each other consistently. They use a various amount of extensive equipment, ranging from Synth Keyboards (Poly & Monophonic) and a rhythm machine, to a laptop sequencer and electronic drums. 'Pixel World EP' is Inabano's first album released onto bandcamp and already you can tell that their style is incredibly strong, with software such as, the Hatsune Miku vocaloid being used to it's full advantage.

ピクセルワールドEP by Inabano Gakudan

To get a good sense of what this album is like check out my pick track, 'Kaamos' which is the opening song off the EP. It starts with the 'Hatsune Miku vocaloid' singing a lovely introduction. The usage of the 'Hatsune Miku vocaloid' really stuck with me, as it's only one of the few times I've heard one being the used in such a promising way. Whilst I can't understand the lyrics, the tune and structure are superb and go into the main hook fantastically, closely following the build up into the crescendo. Moving onto the main hook, it's really reminiscent of music like 'Seapunk', calling back to music from the likes of, 'Whitely' and 'Unicorn Kid'. The beat is both tasty and bouncy, with the bass fluctuating around the the melody in a strong fashion. Let's not forget 'Hatsune Miku', happily singing whilst this the music is going on, scattering the vocals towards the end of bars. 'Kaamos' is a fantastic song to listen to when you just want to feel happy about yourself. It also gave me the push to get round to making a happy Japanese music playlist, due to listening to it so much.

'Pixel World EP' was a nice album to review instead of the usual chiptune stuff I have in circulation, and it's made me realise I need to be a bit more diverse in the world of chipmusic when reviewing.

Continuing on from the Nanoloop Hype train, we have an absolute minimalist album from German artist, 'havocCc.' 'havocCc' is known across much of Europe for his exclusive talent in using Nanoloop 2.0 to create live minimalist chiphouse beats! I'd already seen 'havocCc' play in London way back during the last 'Hyperwave' by 'Shirobon', and his method really interested me. However it wasn't until the Chip Bit Day Pre Party in manchester when 'havocCc' played, he really made his mark. The sound, structure, ferocity and method to creation, went all above and beyond expectations. So much so that one speakers had to call it quits temporarily, as it had overheated from the constant bass! :O

'_Lo_Tech' is havocCc's first nanoloop release since touring for the last two years across europe, working on composing music on the fly. Through all this experimentation, havocCc has managed to record each song off '_Lo_Tech' in one take. This is one incredible feat.

_Lo-Tech by havocCc

Anyway, let's take a listen to the first track, '_Lo_Tech #1'. Prior to the album release, I was already aware '_Lo_Tech #1', as it was featured on the 'Chip Bit Day Compilation Album'. It begins very minimalistic, with the synth slowly opening up. Whilst that one sound doesn't immediately show where havocCc is going, new harsher tones are brought into the mix and built upon. The song gradually expands when sound of a gong signals the turn in style a sudden addition of the kick. This knocks the jam in gear, causing havocCc get's to work the next stage. Whilst the track is almost 10 minutes long, a lot is still going on, with various different changes throughout, there's always something being changed or altered.

Although I really dug '_Lo_Tech #1' I must confess due to the long running time of each track, I found it quite hard to listen to each track fully to make a balanced opinion. I can appreciate the sheer amount of effort that went into each song, but I feel that gets lost when a song is almost 10 minutes. For the next album, I would reduce the amount of tracks to instead 4, or reduce the time of the tracks to about 7 minutes. That said, it's a great effort which shows how accomplished havocCc has become.

I look forward to what he comes up with next!

After handling the behemoth known as Chip Bit Day, it feels great to get back into doing some reviews. After racking a collection of chiptune albums, it definitely seems like Nanoloop is topping the list for 2018, with certain release such as, Monotony's 'Eternal Slumber' Party & Classic Mistake's 'Geothermal'. Next on my list is 'Vanilla Dome' by 'Glooms' and released with, 'Datafruits'.

Started a few years ago in Seattle USA, 'Glooms is a project by Tanner Hughes, spanning over a variety different machines, from Nanoloop to Electribes & Ableton. 'Vanilla Dome' focuses more on the combination of Nanoloop & Drum Machine.

vanilla dome by glooms

We begin with the opening track off the album, 'Vanilla Dome 1' which kicks out vibes like a chilled sunday morning in bed. Starting out with shimmering arpeggio scattering itself, it's soon built upon by the rolling sound of eclectic drum beats that are complimentary towards the chilled out nature, like rocks to a scotch. Seriously though, the drums pop beautifully, with instruments such as the kick giving off just a tight, high toned click. Check out '1:09' for a good example off what I'm talking about. Outside of the percussion, the melodies are also sublime too, weaving about perfectly with each other. Filter & delay effects are further added in for good measure, providing an extra layer for the dynamics of 'Vanilla Dome 1 ' but giving the extra kick that the song needed.

vanilla dome by glooms

Whilst 'Vanilla Dome 1' is more an upbeat chilled tune to melt to, the opposite can be said for my next pick track, 'Lifestyles of The PNW', which comes across feeling more like an exorcism of house music. This is down to the several hooks, such as, 'The chanting keys', which ring out like a choir of gouls in unison. This sound is used for much of Glooms' music and particularly effective; here's some context to why. To the listener, all this sounds very uncanny and strange. This is because 'Glooms' has de-tuned much of the sound as well as using odd matching notes, making them sound slightly out of key. The method in turn makes the listener cringe a bit because of the unfamiliarity of the sound. It's mainly down to this why 'Lifestyles of The PNW' is a stand out track for many on 'Vanilla Dome' album. One other thing that contributes to the signature sound, is the constant use of delay on each and every channel, whilst using dynamics on the speakers to make everything flow around the listener. It's particular effective practice when trying to push ghastly themes.

Glooms' 'Vanilla Dome' was an interesting listen, namely down to Glooms being one of the few artists who takes advantage of Nanoloop's syncing capabilities. I've only seen a couple artists do this (2xAA & Cheapshot to name a few). Admittingly Nanoloop 2.0 can be quite limited sometimes in it's form whilst compared to LSDJ, however there are a few points make the software far stronger than the latter, with the easiness to sync up play being a big win for me. With releases like 'Vanilla Dome', Nanoloop is definitely shaping up to be chiptune synth of 2018.

Seeing as I've been reviewing a lot of the albums I missed out on last year, let's instead look at an album in 2018. 'Classic Mistake' is a an artist I've only recently come across, beginning with a cover of 0F Digital's, 'Mesh' and featured in 'The Great Australian Barbecue Bash' compilation. What I liked about 'Classic Mistake' is that he almost exclusively uses 'Nanoloop 2.0', creating some fantastic hooks which are reminiscent to early techno. 'Geothermal' is Classic Mistake's first album released under 'Cheapbeats'.

Geothermal by Classic Mistake

We begin with Classic Mistake's opening signature track, 'Geothermal' and starts very strong, featuring eclectic beats complete with tantalising a snare & cymbal combination. The drums are complimented with some colourful group of keys & bass, that shimmer and shine as the track continues forward. Both the percussion and keys are Classic Mistake's strong points, feeling creative and effective. A good example of this in 'Geothermal' is during the build up at around the 1:00 mark. It features a fantastic, tight fill of the drums as the keys slowly build up in volume until hitting the crescendo. It really gives off the that late 80s / early 90s techno vibe and continues throughout the track. 'Geothermal' is a smooth, tight track that uses strong foundations and builds upon perfectly.

Geothermal by Classic Mistake

Whilst 'Geothermal' is more about building around the piano keys, my next pick, 'Loose Unit' focuses upon tight bass lines that slightly remind me of New Order's 'Blue Monday'. However, unlike Blue Monday's funky attitude, 'Loose Unit' is more darker in its tone and nature. Its main hook -the bass line- feels more heavier than anything else off the track listing, yet the minimalistic tone makes 'Loose Unit' the most catchiest tracks off the album. Again Classic Mistake's drums are on point, tight as the hell, complimenting the minimalism of 'Loose Unit' but sizzling on it's own as well, through unique instruments such as, its cymbals and rides.

'Geothermal' was a great listen for a new chiptune album of 2018 and I loved Classic Mistake's tight style using Nanoloop 2.0, so much so that I ended buying the CD version of the album (it's constantly on rotation in my stereo). It's similar to 2xAA's however, 'Classic Mistake' relies on using the piano, along a mixture of major and minor melodies. 'Geothermal' was a great introduction to 'Classic Mistake', and after seeing his venture into 'Nanoloop Mono', I'm looking towards his future material!

Hey guys. It's been a while since I last published a review, mainly down to getting the funding secure for Chip Bit Day 18, but I'll talk about that later. For now I'd like to review an album that I've been sitting on for a while now. It's 'Monolith' by Graz and was released with 'Ravertooth Tiger'.

The last time I review a Graz album was back in 2016 with 'Ravepunk' and that released by 'Cheapbeats'. It was a great listen whilst feeling incredibly boppy & funky. 'Monolith' however is a lot different compared to 'Ravepunk', sounding more heavy whilst feeling darker & grittier.

Monolith by Graz

The best example of these themes can be heard in the opening track, 'Death Becomes', which features some sinister sounds from the furious WAV channel, accompanied by the dark & deadly melody made by the Pulse channels. This melody in fact is probably one of the catchiest hooks off the album and it immediately captures you, engulfing you in a aura of death & hysteria. It's also referenced a fair bit throughout 'Death Becomes', with 'Graz' using pieces of the melody, improvising and leading to quiet some variety in the song.

Monolith by Graz

Whilst death & darkness are heavy themes throughout, 'Graz' also brings dubstep into the mix, heavily using the the Wav Channel to issue some great break downs. This can be heard in the track 'Burst (Bit By Bit)' which uses frequent ascending & descending 'WAV voice sounds'. It's a great unique little hook in the track, and without it 'Burst' wouldn't be what it was.

Monolith by Graz

Sampling is another technique used to a great extent, leading to some interesting sequences that lend themselves to the dark themes produced. Monolith's signature track is a great leader in displaying this, with the introduction showing some fantastic techniques merging percussion and voice samples with each other. The samples are so quickly used that you're unable to understand the meaning behind them, yet provide the necessary kick to 'Monolith.' Whilst the sampled sequence is interesting in 'Monolith', I cannot forget the WAV's produced in the song, as the sounds & tones created are by far some of the most intriguing and deadly hooks off the album.

Graz's album 'Monolith' is yet another album from 2017 that I failed to review quickly. Thankfully I made by for that and giving it the necessary words it deserves.

The first review of 2018 just so happens to come from the prior year. Monotony's 'Eternal Slumber Party' was released during the middle of december 2017 and kindly shared by Paul of 'Pain Perdu'. Like 2xAA's album last year, 'Eternal Slumber Party' was recorded as a house set in Nanoloop 2.0, influenced by various genres; from juke & footwork, to dub, trap & progressive. Samples are also heavily used from a variety of different rappers and anime.

The majority of tracks merge seamlessly together and because of this, I'm going to do short reviews of a few tracks from a select part of the album.

ETERNAL SLUMBER PARTY by Monotony

We begin this review by starting on the well-named opening track, 'Intro (Vert)'. The track instantly creates energy getting into the mix of things, with a variety of tasty arpeggios thrown about and rap samples peppered in. The strongest part from the get-go is monotony's skill building sweet fills in the percussion. You really get feel of the footwork & trap genres here and they fill the majority of the album is colour and character.

ETERNAL SLUMBER PARTY by Monotony
ETERNAL SLUMBER PARTY by Monotony

The 2nd track 'SiK YoShi' acts more as a bridge between 1 & 2, as it's very directionless. However IT contains elements of both 'Intro (Vert)' and the third song, 'Fated 2b Faded'.

'Fated 2b Fade' is a lot more melodic in its leads, whilst being extremely rhythmic in its percussion. Both parts play off against each other nicely; the lead warm, inviting & full of attack; the cymbals & ride, always shuffling and sizzling. 'Fated 2b Faded' ends up by mixing into the 4th Track, 'Attacking The Corners' with samples of character 'Sayuki' from 'Initial D'.

ETERNAL SLUMBER PARTY by Monotony

I'll end this review by talking about one of my favourite parts off the album, the awesome tune, 'No Comply til you die', as it contains some of heaviest Nanoloop bass I've heard. I thought you'd wouldn't be able to get a sound like that from the cart, however it seems 'Monotony' proved me wrong. I love the crunchy grind every time the track hits a peak of the bass as it really tries to tickle your ears. Due to this 'No Comply til you die' has pushed me to investigate this particular trick more in Nanoloop, and whether I can reproduce it.

It was ashame I didn't have enough time to get into Monotony's Eternal Slumber Party as a lot of the track had potential to be in the top 10! At least I'll have the CD to blast out in the car though.

Well who'd have thought 2017 would've been an interesting year! Probably a lot of us considering Trump made office, but even more so for the chiptune genre. Although 2016 had a quite few notable tracks, 2017 has seen an explosion of new and awesome tunes to dive into. So without further ado, let's dive into it!

10 - Nuage De Lait - Pain Perdu (Bubu Remix)

Nouvelle Lune by Pain Perdu

We kick this countdown off with no.10 and I've already broken my own rules. I try not to include remixes or copies of songs, but this one by 'Bubu' was too good to pass up. Having already seen 'Bubu' play at 'Chip Bit Day' last year his music blew me away, so to hear this song sets a new precedent towards well produced LSDJ music. It's fantastic blend of music which fills the void that 'TREY FREY' has unfortunately left.

~Bubu~
Soundcloud | Facebook | Bandcamp | Twitter

9 - 2xAA - Delta

Flow (DATA053) by 2xAA

'Flow' by '2xAA' came out almost a year ago, but still it's making waves in the chiptune scene. Although you need to listen to the whole album to understand its beauty, Delta is a great example of how to really use 'Nanoloop' to create good music. Through its use of synthy bass, warm keys and melancholy lead, 'Delta' shows how create a groovy house track with great results.

Coming out towards the end of the year, 'Particles' is the signature track off 'Monodeers' long anticipated album. With its sublime use of dubstep, humble volca beats hooked up to LSDJ, it's amazing end to an album which lives up to the hype it built up. Slow & sinister, Monodeer's 'Particles' is definitely deserves to be in the top 10 tracks of 2017.

For No.6 we have 'Tense Max Beam' from the long awaited EP 'A mutal promise' by 'Chibi-Tech'. What makes this track insane is down to the fact it was made entirely on a NES, something we rarely hear people do (which is sad). Featuring a killer parts such as breakbeat drums & a screeching lead, 'Tense Max Beam' is a song that has made itself known throughout 2017 and is probably at the top of most people's favourite tracks of the year.

Using probably the most intense & craziest LSDJ programming techniques I've ever seen from an artist, no.7 is 'Waste LAN' by 'Roboctopus'. Just listening to this track, you can tell the amount of passion put into creating this song, making sure every little bit is absolutely spot on. What makes it even more on point is the fact that 'Waste LAN' uses two gameboys to give the impressive style you hear.

Back when 'TRUTHR' was released ,l 'Brandon L Hood of Chipwin', cited this track as one he could listen to all day. I second that. 'Earth II' by 'TRUTHR' (AKA 'Henry Homesweet') is soothing blend of all things 'Commodore 64' & 'Gameboy'. Earth II's main strength is its focus on sound & tone, going into realms of soundscape & chillwave. Because of this, almost every play through of 'Earth II' gives a feeling of euphoria, rarely heard from songs of any genre (let alone chiptune).

No.4 is kinda of cheating. Technically released the very end of 2016, I never really got to listen to this track, -'Voyage pt I' by 'L-tron & Rockman'- till the literal beginning of 2017. That said, it's still a big track I constantly listen to even after over a year. It begins with one of the strongest introductions of this list, immediately feeling the pump of the beat created, before going into hysterics with the 'V cmd'. Being part of the house genre, 'Voyage pt I' is one of the few tracks which creatively pushes itself forward, constantly coming up with an addictive hook to keep you in the swing of things. Definitely one track I'll gladly allow in 2017!
I was quite late to the party with No.3, having forgotten all about DBOYD's album, 'Paradise'. This is all changed when I found out 'DBOYD' was playing 'Squaresounds Tokyo'. So I quickly dived into DBOYD's album 'Paradise', and became in love with its style and substance. 'Brightsided' is the standout out track off the album for me and my No.3, mainly because of DBOYD's hectic style, which shines more than anything off 'Paradise'. The constant go of its cheeky melodies really keeps mood up, almost as if you're at the center of a party. 'Brightsided' is definitely one song I didn't forget off my top 10 list.
I really had a hard time thinking what song I should pick off Chrome Cobra's album for my No.2. I knew he'd be my penulimate track of the list, but every one of the songs off Mobile Swarming could actually be there. In the end I chose 'Mocktail'. This was mainly because even though it's the longest track off the album, it makes the most effort to keep your attention. Everything from start to finish has been crafted perfectly; the bass, melody, sound of the drums; literally EVERYTHING! As with 'L-tron', 'Chrome Cobra' has been another artist that I've been constantly going back to.

Okay No.1. The 'piece de resistance' I if do say so myself. 'Pain Perdu' have been making huge waves through the chiptune scene for the last two years and in turn creating so much hype for the album that was to come. So naturally, when 'Nouvelle Lune' was released, it came with huge praise. There were quite a few standout tracks, however one that pricked my ears especially was the final song, 'Balsamique'. The melodies were spot on. The percussion was impeccable. The bass was killer. Everything was created to perfection and in doing so made my No.1 track of 2017. Well done guys!

This is another album that has been in my possession that I've yet to review...until now. I first had the pleasure of meeting & hearing Alex Lane's music back in 2016 when he first came to Manchester for the 'ChipBattles Tournament.' Originally from Australia but now living in Southsea, England, Alex's style felt very classical but at the same time, came off quite technical. This was changed up however when he was featured for Chip Bit Day 17 and came up to Manchester with a midi guitar hooked up to a C64! The result was quite amazing, the sound made fuller due to the bass.

Alex's latest album, 'Titan' is his 2nd to date. Released with 'Chiptune powerhouse', Cheapbeats it features a more refined music style compared to his previous one.

Titan by Alex Lane

We start off this review with the opening track, 'Chinon' off Titan and it begins with a fantastic arpeggio, before descending into a fat, bassy melody. Just the sound coming off this instrument is enough hook you in, the playful tune from Alex walking up and down the scale, like a journey with no end in sight. As well as that, it's slow nature allows the notes to resonate and make more of an impact, especially at the high & lows of the scale.

Titan by Alex Lane

'Chinon' then slowly transcends into it's 2nd song, the album title track, 'Titan'. This song is the complete opposite of 'Chinon'. Instead of being slow & soft, 'Titan' is hard & fast, utilising a lot of sweeping between notes as well as breaks. 'Titan' often feels like snappy with some bite, especially towards the '2:40' mark which transcends into a heavy mixture of heavy pulse.

Titan by Alex Lane

Although 'Titan' is the title of track off the album, I wouldn't say it's the best. I think that title goes to the last track off the album,'Ulriken', as it's the best of both worlds with Alex's use of melody is incredibly on point. 'Ulriken' immediately begins hooking you in with a addictive sequences of chords, before going into probably one of the most catchiest tunes of the album. But Alex's creative use of the scale never cease's to amaze, going from strength to strength, backed up with its strong use of chords.

Out of all the albums this year, I believe 'Titan' has the most creative use in melody & its notes. Although the whole album is quite slow at points, I believe some of it's best moments are during those times. I'm definitely looking towards future bassy tunes that alex creates, as each one runs seems to run shivers down my spine.

This week is an entirely different kind of beast when it comes to LSDJ. Monodeer is an artist who has been in the chipscene since 2010, shaping the sound of what chipbass is. 'Particles' (released via, The Base Bit) was my first album listening to Monodeer, so I was interested to hear what I'd been missing out, especially considering the introduction of a volca beats.

TBBR007 | Particles by MONODEER

Although the whole album stood out, the one song that hooked me in the most was the track, 'The Reckoning featuring Mega Ran'. It starts off with a fantastic intro, sliding into a fill of gameboy noise, before the slow fat bass line takes control. This is where 'Mega Ran' takes to the mic, his lyrical prowess on point with Monodeers' backing music. Although in most cases the rapper is made the main focus of the song, I feel in this case Monodeer's backing is balanced very well with Mega Ran's lyrics, the main musical hook sounding powerful as hell. 'Monodeer' even has his own part of the track where he shows more of his technological LSDJ wizardy. Out of all the rapping collaborations in chiptune, I feel 'The Reckoning' is one where both the music & lyrics are on point work fantastically.

TBBR007 | Particles by MONODEER

Moving on, another track that I think needs to be talked about, is the Album title track, 'Particles'. I love how minimalistic the music sounds from the gameboy & volca, yet a closer listen shows a lot more going in terms of sound design and how the drums slowly play. It's main hook, a dubstep trill beginning at '1:30' is exactly what separates 'Particles' from the rest of the songs on the album. Unlike dubstep however, 'Particles' is a lot easier on the ears, with the sound of the hook more soft & warm, rather the dirty feel you generally get from the rhythm. This in turn makes 'Particles' more accessible to people who generally put off from chiptune.

Overall I really enjoyed listening to 'Particles' from Monodeer, mainly due to the introduction of the Volca Beats Drum Machine. This is something I can really appreciate, as I too use a volca (The 'Sample') in my music. Very important machines when wanting to take your music the extra mile. 'Particles' will definitely be an album that I'll be listening to in the future to come.

This week we're staying away from the retro consoles, and instead picking up all things midi. 'Midi City' by 'Data Stream' is a album which utilises a variety of old school hardware; from a 'Yamaha DX7s Keyboard' & 'Boss DR550 drum machine', to a 'Korg MS2000 Synthesiser' and 'Yamaha MU5 Tone Generator'. These are just a few of the machines that 'Data Stream' uses throughout Midi City's Album.

Let's dive right in!

MIDI city by DATAStream

we'll begin with the opening track, 'Concierge'. It starts off superbly, with vocalised keys introducing us into some stellar pumping bass, whilst the rhythm of the drums roll along, the kicks almost mimicking the bass line. As for the keys, 'Data Stream' layers them almost graceful-like, the upbeat nature already supplying the funkiness of the song. 'Concierge' is a fantastic track to begin with on 'Midi City', as really tries to put you back in the nostalgic waters of city life. It almost feels as if you could be listening to this track whilst driving down the claustrophobic roads of 80s Manhattan.

MIDI city by DATAStream

As 'Concierge' draws to close, we'll now segway into the 2nd track and my next pick; 'Night Walk'. This song is just as funky as 'Concierge', however instead focusing on mood, 'Night Walk' amps of the energy of the bass, giving an almost slap-like feel to it. Along with the bass, we also have a xylophone playing in the back further adding to the rhythm. I love the how both these sounds interact with each other, their staccato feel playing off another. This allow the the drums to hang back, focussing more on the clavs & cowbells, which fit more with rhythmic nature of the bass & xylo. Over the top for the lead we have more midi sounds, with some suited to the style & feel of a guitar. 'Data stream' use's this particular midi sound rather smoothly, using legato to slide through the notes. 'Night Walk', definitely suits it's name and is a stand-out track on 'Midi City'.

'Midi City' is a smooth & funky album to listen to. It was a nice change to the raw 8 bit sound I usually get. The relaxing & chill sound was incredibly nostalgic to hear and felt like I'd been transported back in time. It also reminded me of City Guys' self titled album, as that too focussed on the whole 'city life theme' as well as the 16 bit soundchip (albeit more sim city-like). Finally, it pretty cool to find out that 'Data Stream' is a fellow mancunian, adding yet another skilful chipmusician to the pile.

This week on Chip Bit Sid, DBOYD'S album, 'Paradise' (released via 'Galaxy Swim Team') has been in my collection for a while, but due to other commitments it fell out of my mind. It wasn't my trip to Japan and I saw him live at Squaresounds 17 however, I was blown away and immediately went to buy 'Paradise' on cassette. From then on I listened to 'Paradise' relentlessly, whilst finding myself constantly humming its catchy riffs.

Paradise EP [GST-13] by DBOYD

It's opening track, 'Lazy Dayze' is a perfect song to begin with, having 'DBOYD' driving up the melody factor way past 100%. You can immediately tell that this dude has an understanding in Jazz fusion melodies, as it really stands out in every instrument played, in not just 'Lazy Dayze' but some of the other tracks too! Lazy Dayze's hook is catchy and playful, trapping you with it's enticing tune. It's also used as nice call back and whilst featured quite a bit throughout, it never wears it's welcome.

Paradise EP [GST-13] by DBOYD

I loved the majority of songs of Paradise, however the last track off, 'Brightsided' was one that truly made my day. With an intro that starts off slow, but quickly gets fast as lightning, 'Brightsided' then explodes in to a chaotic fusion of all things ferocious & melodic. 'DBOYD' is never afraid to hit the high notes of LSDJ, keeping the high octane energy going, only leaving a few seconds to pause before further pushing the insanity!

Out of both tracks reviewed here, they all are outstanding. However I have to say, 'Brightsided' is the better track out of the two, pushing the chaos of what DBOYD is known whilst still allowing the hooks & catchiness of the melody trickle in.

'Paradise' is a fantastic album for 2017, and although my review was late it definitely has some tracks in the top 10 of this year.

Disclosure: This charity album is my own project. However, after discussing it with Brandon we decided it would be fine to promote, as all of the proceeds are going to charity. This was originally a post from Chiptunes=Win.

Back in 2014 when Chip Bit Sid had just started, Superbyte was well into it's 4th event and was popular as ever. I had been getting sucked into the chiptune community, had made a lot of friends, and was building a lot of traction with the blog. It was at this point that I decided that I wanted to sell a compilation, but with all the proceeds going to Barnardos, a charity that helped abandoned children. I immediately got a lot of artists who wanted to give a track to the cause and
got into making a physical CD to sell at Superbyte. Sales were better than expected, making over £220, with some of the money being given by the Superbyte group themselves! It was a great project which made me feel proud of the chiptune community as well as what I'd managed to achieve!

Fast forward to this year and Square Sounds Toyko is happening. I've managed to scrape the money for a holiday in Japan and, with some cash left over I decided it was time for another charity album called, 'Chip To Be Square'. This time however I decided to team up with people from all over, with the money going towards Special Effect, a UK based charity which helps the less-abled play video games, by modifying controllers as well as utilising eye control.

We'll begin with the opening track from x Critical Strike x, 'Rainbow Storm'. This was taken from his newest album 'Operation: Rainbow Storm'. This was a good track to open up the album due to x Critical Strikes x's signature style, which is reminiscent of the 'Kirby' days. It's also the high impact energy emitted from the whole track, as well as the constant pitch changes that illustrate how 'x Critical Strike x' pushes the momentum further and further. If you liked this track, you'll be happy to hear he's playing the 'Squaresounds Toyko Pre-party'. Hopefully he'll be his full pac-man suit like he was at 'Chip Bit Day 16'.
What I like about this track is that everything is so incredibly tight in terms of percussion and rhythm, with the parts like the snare coming in crystal clear. It's also one of the only tracks to not really feature a clear structure, playing one unique piece after the other. Out of all the tracks, Party Brew is the danciest song off the compilation, with 2xAA's proggy house vibes coming in beautifully.
Probably one of my favourites from the whole compilation, Bubu's 'Ability' is one ultra amazing song created using 2x gameboys with LSDJ. As soon as you begin listening to this track, you'll realise the production values are amazing, with much of the leads done through the the WAV channel. The dnb beats are also to die for, with Bubu showing off some brilliantly crafted patterns. This track alone was one of the reasons why Bubu was invited to play Chip Bit Day this year. That and he's one amazing dude! :)
One final track before I head to pack for Japan: I'd like to give a shout out to Joshquery and his track, 'Spectre'. The reason for this is predominantly due to how much I've seen him progress as an artist. I first gave him a shout a year back for his track, 'Spaceshuttle'.The track's style is completely different than what 'Spectre's is now, with a lot of grimecore and chipstep coming to the front in Josh's new work. I'd say 'Spectre' is one of heaviest tracks off the entire compilation with a lot of Josh's focus on the WAV channel, trying to create the sickest bleeps and bloops. That's not to say the other channels are neglected. The pulse channel is heavily used as the beat, producing one fat and juicy kick, that slices through all the noise the WAV. It's great to see a chiptune artists music get better as they go forth, and I'm looking forward to see what he has in the future!

Although these tracks are fantastic, there are plenty others that are epic to listen to, with tracks from 'Crab Sound' & 'Cyanide Dansen' making huge waves in the community! There's also this Kojin fella, he's pretty neat too... I guess.

Anyway, It's good to see musicians from across the world in the community wanting to help and raise money towards a good cause, and is something I'm very glad to be apart of. If you'd like to help me raise money towards Special Effect, it would be hugely appreciated. If not, that's cool too. :)

This week we're looking at the latest album from the London based hyperpop artist, 'Space Candy'. I first found out about Space Candy when they released their first album, 'Forest' with 'DeskPop' last year. Whilst the consistent changes in 'Forest' through the beats & grooves threw me off a little, it wasn't until 'Space Candy' played 'Chip Bit Day 17' and showed off their unique & and hectic style in amazing form. I was blown away at how solid their set was as well as how cheeky the style was.

Fast forward a few months down the line and 'Space Candy has released their 2nd album, 'Soft Circles' (released again with 'Deskpop') and for me it's a huge step up from their previous album, 'Forest'.

Soft Circles by Space Candy

I kick this review off with the opening track, 'Enchanted Textural', and is a perfect song to begin an album with. It immediately kicks off with a heart pounding beat, whilst a flourish of claps & bent-like effects roll off fantastically together, with a signature hard saw-like riff acting as the hook and go between link. I feel 'Enchanted Textural' is a stronger than any of the tracks from 'Forest', mainly due to there being a sense of repetition and similarity in the samples & sounds that are used. It also helps that there being a solid groove & beat that's easily addictive to dance to.

Soft Circles by Space Candy

The same can be next pick track, 'Bloop Arms' which actively tries to be dancey as hell. Albeit shorter than my first pick, I found the arpeggios at the beginning mesmerising, and as soon as the track hits the 25 second mark, I feel they come into their style, complimented with a simple yet heart pounding beat. 'Space Candy' then changes up it yet again by adding a upbeat, going into a hugely funky bassline. It then ends in what is the general way to finish final tracks of album; with a slow, soft & sublime outro with warm, soothing keys. What I liked about 'Bloop Arms' is mainly down to 'Space Candy' making everything work with the beat. The arpeggio, bassline & even samples melded wonderfully with groove, with nothing was changed too much with the rhythm.

In terms of direction, 'Soft Circles' is completely different when compared to 'Space Candy's' previous album. 'Forest' felt more experimental in its use of grooves & rhythm, but 'Soft Circles' feels more accessible as an album, with the beat easier to pick up. 'Soft Circles' is a welcome addition to my long Bandcamp catalogue and I look forward to they bring next time.

This is week to try and keep up with the weekly reviews, here's an album from the highly hyped duo, 'Pain Perdu'. I've been following 'Pain Perdu' for a while now, ever since they came onto the 'Chipwin boards' offering help with 'LSDJ' as well as having delightful discussions. Their first epic release was last year on the 'Chiptunes=win compilation vol.5', with 'Artefact' and showed some mesmerising programming as well as unique jams only seen from a few artists. It also comes as no surprise that 'Cheap Beats' is helping to releases Pain Perdu's 1st album!

So it is a real pleasure to jump right into what is probably one of this years best albums; 'Nouvelle Lune'.

Nouvelle Lune by Pain Perdu

There's a huge pick of choice tracks on, however I have to start with, 'Tournesol'. It begins with some great use of arpeggios & a needling lead which quickly transcends into a powerful sequence of chords, before going into probably one of the best hooks off the album. Words cannot describe how gut punching it is to hear; it almost sounds like the track has just gone around the world at the speed of light, only to smack you square in the jaw. Quite powerful indeed. I also can't forget to mention the unique & almost carousel like sequence; it's rolling feel & arpeggios running up and down the board. Whilst not the most danciest (the change in pace sees to that) 'Tournesol' has a lot of character, namely through it's melody work, chords & structure.

Nouvelle Lune by Pain Perdu

'Balsamique' is the final track (aside from the remixes) from Pain Perdu, and it's big one, through its vastly strong leads which are 100% solid from start to finish. The energy is constantly pushed around and flowing, from 0:00, 0:35, 1:15, 1:35 and onwards till finish. Those points were probably the parts that hit me the most, with the best bit 2:15, when a fill of breakbeats enter the ring, providing a fantastic and breakdown into the next part.

Nouvelle Lune is a fantastic album to break out with and from a duo who have already shown what they're made of! However I doubt this will be the their best material, and I'm expecting even better things to come in the future of Pain Perdu.

I'm finally back from my holiday from Japan, and this time it's EP called, 'RUN DCPM' from '2A0X' (AKA Henry Homesweet). Henry has been quite busy this year having already released a 4 track album under the moniker, 'TRUTHR', experimenting using the C64. 'RUN DCPM' is the 3rd album Henry has released under the name, '2A0X', and it continues the same style heard in, 'Ambush', using the sublime 'midines' and cool 'TR-808'.

Run DPCM by 2A0X

This unique style can be immediately identified whilst listening to the opening track, 'RUN DCPM'. It's literally almost synonymous with Ambush, as it's borrows a lot of sounds and parts from the track, '$4020'. Even the tempo & drum patterns is pretty similar. The song however is just as creative, bringing an array of rhythmic arpeggios, subtle samples and electro vibes to the table. It almost feels like a more hardcore version of fatboy slim's earlier work, through the clever use of programming on more than one part. There's also no easy structure leading the way, allowing 'RUN DCPM' to be its own track.

Run DPCM by 2A0X

Another fantastic track to listen to is the 3rd song, 'Midnight Commander' which a lot more progressive than the opener, featuring more of a focus on the sounds of TR-808, with the snares & symbols leading the forefront (The toms were also a close favourite, especially during the chorus). Lately, I've been really digging the unique sounds of the TR-808, so hearing one meld perfectly with the soundchip of the NES is very much welcome. Instead of attacking the ears like 'RUN DCPM' did, the NES sounds are instead more laid back and are used more as leads & effects that ripple & pulsate throughout.

Although 'RUN DCPM' doesn't have the same impact as 'Ambush' did, it's very well made album that shows 20AX/Henry Homesweet can utilise almost any console he can get his hands on; be it a Gameboy Advance, a NES or a C64.

Here's something that's quite outside my usual means of music. Whilst not staple gameboy chiptune, the essence of the Snes is captured perfectly in soundfonts & midi, along with every aspect of chill & vaporwave. Windows彡96 is an experimental vaporwave artist from Sao Paulo and relentlessly makes electronic music whilst keeping it sounding fresh. I've been following Windows彡96 for a little while now, ever since I found some of their music on Business Casual. However, it's because of their dabbling into the chiptune genre they got my attention, namely through the album, 'Plume Valley'.

Plume Valley by wind96

Getting straight into the review, the opening track, 'Yujia Forest', sums the entire style for what's to come in 'Plume Valley'; Soulful, Chilled out, Minimalistic but full of passion & wonder. It begins fantastically through the use of bright & tinny sounding drums, using some light delay, whilst whimsical keys are played underneath. That's when the staple horns of vaporwave are played, but not as to rely on them too much (they are in the track for about 20 seconds. The minimalistic style is more focused upon, and is one that 'Windows彡96' achieves, building upon sounds & instruments strengths throughout. The only thing absent from the 'Yujia Forest' is the bass, which is used very sparing. This allows the song to flow freely, not allow a beat to form that would disrupt the mood.

Plume Valley by wind96

Although 'Yujia Forest' was a great opening, The third track, 'Kylin Forest' is a more prominent, albeit only just a little. 'Kylin Forest' is different namely in Windows彡96's creative use of drums, using a mixture of bright, hard snares & toms, as well as one electronic snare thrown in for good measure. The drums don't just stop there though; 'Windows彡96' rolls out some killer fills as well, almost sounding like they've come straight out Phil Collins song, 'In The Air Tonight'. Apart from the percussion, 'Kylin Forest' is also much more melodic in its leads & tune, utilising a variety of different instruments, from Peruvian Flutes to wet clavs. All in all, 'Kylin Forest' is an uplifting & spiritual song that out does 'Yujia Forest' in very aspect.

I found Plume Valley very enlightening and great addition to my bandcamp collection & probably one of the most chilled albums I have to date. Although I came across 'Plume Valley' by chance, it will be one of my go-to albums for my holiday to Japan next week!

I've been sitting on this EP for a while now, and whilst it's only a couple of tracks, it's definitely one EP that has picked up my fancy this year. Chibi-Tech's 'The Mutual Promise', is an album which has been long in the works; she rarely releases much but whenever Chibi-Tech does, it's very good.

As with much of her music, 'The Mutual Promise' is sequenced on Famitracker, the music tracker that emulates the whole sound of the NES/Famicom, as well as the extra sound chip, the 'Konami VRC6'. Although the signature sound of the NES is generally associated with that of 'Mario', a lot of chip musicians really programme hard into it, with artists such as, 'Please Lose Battle' & much of the US chip-rock opting to ultilise the sound of the console.

Getting straight into the review, you'll instantly recognise that this album is really hardcore in terms of style and substance. It's evident Chipi-Tech takes much of her inspiration from genres like Dub-step & hardcore drum and bass.

The Mutual Promise by chibi-tech

'Tense Max Beam' is a good example of this, where the main hook hits you hard, with the lead breakdowning with such brutal force. You'll find yourself immediately getting hooked and tangled in the beat as it rides tightly along with the high pitched squeal. Her arpeggios too find their place in the song, acting as the crux of rhythm (besides the drums) for the melody. The arps also work perfectly as Chibi-Tech builds up the tension each time the songs comes up to a drop. After a good listen, 'Tense Max Beam' is a fantastic to start with and really manages to hook you in, through both it's lead, heart pumping drops & killer breaks.

Whilst 'Tense Max Beam' is a thumping song to get you in the mood, on the other side of the coin we have 'Neuromageddon', an extreme track based on fast & heavy drum and bass starting with a slow buildup.

The Mutual Promise by chibi-tech

Instead of there being a melody to follow like 'Tense Max Beam', 'Neuromageddon' has heavy breakbeats, which ferociously come out at you, along with the aggressive snapping of the snares. As well as that, there's one raunchy and lead, which serves as the hook to play along with the breaks. It almost feels as if it is it's own voice, something I've heard chibi-tech do prior in her tracks. All of this together, combined with some of the most distorted & scary samples I've heard in a while, 'Neuromageddon' becomes one solid & hard hitting track.

Chibi-Tech's 'The Mutual Promise' is such a great EP, with both tracks great contenders for being the best chip tracks of 2017. However I really wish a couple more tracks were included, as both 'Tense Max Beam & Neuromageddon' are hyped tracks that keep you wanting more.

This was a reblog from an article I did a little while ago back in may for Chiptunes=win.

I was given exclusive tickets to go and see 'Mega Ran live' in Manchester at the 'Castle Hotel', courtesy of my chiptune buddy, 'Auracle'. Auracle would also be opening for the Arizona-based rapper. I'd seen' Mega Ran' a few times already; twice at Superbyte and then again when he opened for 'MC Lars'. However, I couldn't pass this up as the 'Castle Hotel' is one of the smallest venues in town, which gives its concerts a real, personal vibe. Getting up close and personal with Ran and his impeccable openers was definitely a sell straight away for me.

For those who don't know Mega Ran, he is one of the big rappers of Chiptune and Nerdcore, starting off by spewing videogame inspired lyrics over a wide range of retro VGM songs. The majority of his tracks were inspired by Capcom games like 'Mega Man' (shock) however 'Final Fantasy' is also heavily referenced too.

I arrived just before the music started in order to get a good place to watch the openers. From previous experience, I knew the Castle's venue would get absolutely packed and sweaty, so I wanted to find an area which both the sound and view would be perfect.

First on the stage was, 'Marx', a rapper from Hull and heavily inspired by such artists as 'Wu-tang Clan' and heavy rock. Marx's set began very strong, showing off his own material as well as performing a couple of covers from the likes of 'Nas'. All splendid, however when it came to the choruses from his original material, I felt they lacked power, mainly due to 'Marx' himself (no fault of his own) singing the vocals. In my opinion, I thought he needed perhaps extra effects over his voice to further drive the chorus. That said, Marx was a good act to kick start Mega Ran's gig.

~Marx~
Bandcamp | Facebook | Youtube | Website | Twitter

Next up was Manchester's boy for chiptune, 'Auracle' who has been seeing a growing amount of popularity for some time. In fact 'Auracle' got the spot to play through word of mouth, with someone passing on his name to 'Mega Ran'. 'Auracle' began his set with a screamer of song called, 'WUBZ' fusing both 'Gameboy chiptune' and 'dubstep'. A fantastically well made track, it really showed off Auracle's detailed knowledge into music and tricks, even though he isn't known for doing solely dubstep music! From there on, the majority of his set stayed strong, with killer tracks such as, 'Can't Get a Break', -full of obligatory break samples-, and a new EDM tune called, 'White Sands, Blue Waters'. This track was extremely tasty, containing some of the sweetest leads of the evening, whilst featuring killer fills and breaks. 'Auracle' finished the set with a freestyle collaboration with 'Marx' rapping over the top; a nice surprise to round off a cool set, and although Marx found it hard to freestyle right off the bat, he got into and managed to make a couple songs his own!

With two acts down, it was now on to the penultimate act before 'Mega Ran', San-Antonio based, 'Richie Branson'. I'd only heard of Richie when I had to research Nerdcore, upon going to see MC Lars. However, Richie managed to blow my expectations sky high, with a lot of his material being extremely relatable. Songs like 'Space Cowboy Serenade', which was written about all things good in 'Cowboy Bebop', a very cool scifi anime! Another thing that I really liked about Richie was how he could grab the crowd's attention so easily, whilst also at the same time acting so chill.

[Courtesy of Dunningkruger]

It could be due to experience, but I feel it was mainly because he immediately talked about what he loved in life; 'anime & videogames' (oh and his 'Alienware Laptop'; it looked pretty cool). Finally it was also rather amazing to find out that not only was Manchester Richie's first overseas show live, he'd also recently beat cancer, an incredible feat.

Now that all the warms had finished, it was time for 'Mega Ran' to take up the stage, with 'K-Murdock' behind him dealing out the jams. As said before, this gig felt very personal to me, due to venue being real small. However with 'Mega Ran' on the stage, it felt much more than just that. Kick starting the show off by letting a person hit start on an old Famicom, Mega Ran, talked to the crowd as if they were old friends, sparking up wisecracks (with 'K-Murdock' adding some really bad jokes) as well as even getting the whole audience to sit down and listen, whilst Ran began 'story time'; regaling a fun little tale as a rap.

[Courtesy of Dunningkruger]

As if it couldn't get any better, 'Mega Ran' also brought out his fabled ,'Mega Man arm canon,' shooting it at the crowd whilst he rapped. Much of Mega Ran's old material was used, with almost every song hyping up the crowd. 'Infinite Lives' was one that really, stuck out for me, partly down to it's upbeat and happy nature, but also down to huge amount of people who knew it and sang along.
After hosting Chip Bit Day literally only a few days before, I thought I'd be burnt out with Chiptune music; I was dead wrong to think, and I had a fantastic time, seeing a lot of unique acts, both old and new! I can now put the amount of times I've seen Mega Ran right next to Pearl Jam!

I wasn't able to do a review last week, as I was really sick. I feel much better this week, however due to getting ready for Gleetch's latest gig in London, I am still mega busy. But that doesn't I'm not reviewing anything, no!

Today I'm reviewing, Amplitude Problem's latest album, 'The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol.1' (released via Ubiktune). Amplitude Problem first started out in chipmusic, way back in the late 80s when the demoscene started up, making music using Atari ST's with the demo crew known as, 'SYNC'. He has long since composed on a variety of different projects, from the likes of 'Mitch Murder' & 'Lazerhawk', to videogame sounds track such as, 'Power Drive 2000'.

AP's latest album, 'The frequency Modulators Orchestra', is a focused conception upon the fusion of Electro & Jazz, whilst exclusively using FM synthesizers & Lofi Drums. Although Jazz is the main genre through this album, I feel there's a lot of variety in the genre itself, with both groovy tunes & smooth, soulful ballads. I myself was particularly taken by the smooth jazz tracks, as I felt those song caught my attention more easily.

The Frequency Modulators Orchestra, Vol. 1 by Amplitude Problem

'The Mutant Mind of Mine' is a good example of this, using the relaxing sound of the fm synth with a gentle swing, to help convey much atmosphere in the background. Not only that, but the entire song radiates the 80s feel, and the pop culture, the likes of Miami Vice and St Elmo's Fire, I also must give a shout to vgms as well, like Final Fantasy 4. Over the top of the keys, jazzy trumpet & guitar leads are introduced, also courtesy of the fm synth, adding in a further coating of jazz to the track. Whilst this song is slow, it's nice & relaxing groove compared to the other tracks, which are more upbeat. I also like the fact the leads are more sporadic, having no direction, something that Jazz is generally known for.

The Frequency Modulators Orchestra, Vol. 1 by Amplitude Problem

Another track that's goes a step further beyond the rest of the album is the final song, 'It's Everything'. It contains something of the best melodic leads & bass lines off the album, whilst remaining catchy with it's iconic sound & hooks. It also feels that AP wanted to focus a bit more on the funk aspect of his melodies whilst still retaining that jazzy nature of the album. My favourite part has to be face melting solos throughout, taking inspiration from the sound of a raunchy guitar for the synth. However I cannot forget the bass, which seems to be the glue that holds rest of the song together. Without it, I don't think the song would have as much of an impact as it does.

It was nice change of pace reviewing Amplitude Problem's 'The Frequency Modulators Orchestra'. I generally review a lot of dancey music that use the staple gameboy, and rarely ever hear some good jazz music from the chipscene. It's made me feel that I really need to get out of my comfort zone of EDM & gameboys.

Last week I decided to take a break and put all my efforts into my chipwin submission. I doubt it'll get excepted but fingers crossed anyway. Today I'm reviewing 'Good Walk Sunday' by Maru303 (and released via 'Scaffolder Recordings'), an artist who resides all the way in Japan and has been making chiptune music for over 5 years (according to soundcloud).

I first came across 'Maru303' & 'Good Walk Sunday', when I was had one of my usual bandcamp marathons; wading through dozens of chiptune albums, trying to find something that catches my ear. What drew me to 'Good Walk Sunday', was the fact Maru had decided to use the Nanoloop App on their phone, rather rely on LSDJ as most people generally do. Since getting into making music on Nanoloop, I've been trying to find more tunes made on it. So finding out 'Good Walk Sunday' had been made using Nanoloop, really enticed me to give it a listen.

Right off from the bat, you can immediately tell that 'Good Walk Sunday' is one of those albums, that are meant to be chilled out to.

GOOD WALK SUNDAY by MARU303

The opening track, 'Day Chime' starts with some lovely & relaxing melodic synth, ringing out and almost sound like a chime clock (it is called, 'Day Chime' after all). Although it feels rather minimalistic, 'Day Chime' is anything but. Relying on each to sound & instrument to create a soundcape, with some parts, such as the PWM synth slowly floating underneath, then filtering out into silence. Certain sounds have been created in Nanoloop perfectly; for example, one sound at '2:08' really sounded like an old sitar being played. This alone really made that part of 'Day Chime'.

Whilst 'Day Chime' is a fantastic opening track to start from, I feel 'Good Walk Sunday' really comes into it's own element further down its track list. That's not say any of its tracks are bad, but I feel 'Maru' starts to get more progressive as the album drives on, relying less on melodies and the cutesy aspect that are found in 'Day Chime'.

GOOD WALK SUNDAY by MARU303

Tracks like 'Long Far' really show off 'Maru's' willingness to experiment with nanoloop, and not remain comfortable in one pattern. Maru also seems to try and create more soundscapes, by melding certain sounds together, making an effect almost similar to what you get from 'Bi-aural Beats'. Just listening to 'Long Far' for a few minutes can cause you to go into a trance and become incredibly chilled.

'Good Walk Sunday' was a very nice & refreshing album to come across this year. Through its reliance on melody & soundscaping, 'Maru303' really shows what Nanoloop is truly capable of. Although 'Good Walk Sunday' was incredibly chilled out, there were a lot of unique sounds to hear & listen to, and will keep you glued to from start to finish.

It's a real scorcher up in Manchester, so what better than to review 'Your Heart Is A Pie Chart' (released via CheapBeats) by long time chip musician, 'Roboctopus'. Residing in Maddison, USA, 'Roboctopus' has been making chipmusic for well over 5 years now, establishing himself a following as one of the greats in chiptune. Primarily focused using gameboys to make his music, 'Roboctopus' has been pushing the sound chip to the max, thinking up new ways on how to convey sounds, whilst keeping it all melodic.

It has been three years since 'Roboctopus' released his previous album, aptly named, 'Jelly', so this latest release has been highly anticipated; and let me tell you, it doesn't fail to deliver.

Your Heart is a Pie Chart by Roboctopus

A lot of 'YHIAPC's' tracks are quintessentially unique, however one track which particularly caught my ear was, 'Slow Motion Sunset'. Although the Roboctopus' titled track (Your Heart Is A Pie Chart) was a good song to begin with, I felt this one really captured what it set out to do. Every instrument rings out to produce a perfect & mesmerising sound, that both hooks & chills you out. The beginning particularly is a stand out part for me, as the bright & melodic sounds feel incredibly uplifting, as well as being a great fit for a sunny drive in the car (true story). However this is further worked on at '3:12' where 'Roboctopus' introduces a very wet & stacato-esque square-wave. That riff solely makes you feel as if you've just plunged into a swimming pool!

Finally to give the track one huge send off, Roboctopus changes it up with a new chord progression as well as, a slow but catchy lead that drums in the notion that 'Slow Motion Sunset' has a lot of heart!

'Slow Motion Sunset' is a great melodic track to show Roboctopus's charm, however there's one track which really shows his real talent, and that has to be 'Waste LAN'.

Your Heart is a Pie Chart by Roboctopus

How every bit of this song has been created is anyone's guess, but I can tell you that the majority of it is done through LSDJ's manipulation of the WAV channel. Two gameboy's are also utilised together to allow for more sample mixing.

The introduction itself, is sublime. The jazzy vaporwave keys softly floating, whilst another snappy sample (a guitar) is used over the top, complete with an arpeggiated pulsewave. However, 'Waste LAN' truly gets into the mix of things at '0:49' when both samples of the WAV's are hacked rhythmically with such music precision. It creates a soul inspiring soundscape rarely seen in chiptune, but also becomes something entirely different outside the genre too. It was definitely a welcomed track for the middle of June.

'Your Heart Is A Pie Chart' is a fantastic album from 'Roboctopus', which shows off both his charm & knowledge in music. However what makes this album even more complete is being released in the middle of summer. The amount of feels I had driving in 28 degree heat the other day was crazy.

For a while this album has been on my to do list but I never got round to it, until recently when I decided to sit down and listen; this album is called, Chrome Cobra's 'Mobile Swarming'. 'Chrome Cobra' is fairly new onto the scene, but has quickly been getting popular from playing live at events, 8static, Pulsewave until finally releasing 'Mobile Swarming' with Planet Zaxxon. 'Mobile Swarming' is a 5 track album, full of funky fresh melodies, killer breaks & mega beats, all created within one gameboy on LSDJ. A good example off what I said prior on 'Mobile Swarming' can be heard in the 2nd track 'Stolen Protocol'.

It shows off a nice blend of 'Chrome Cobra's' choice of breaks, but also contains impressive attention to the rhythm through the track, melding well with the drums. I found myself getting hooked easily to each part of 'Stolen Protocol', particularly one bit at '01:44', a simple yet hugely effective bassy lead. It seemed to flow beautifully whilst the beat & claps pitter pattered around. However that said, there were many other different parts of 'Stolen Protocol' that were just as effective & I liked; hell, even now as I get towards the end, I'm caught in the it's insane rhythm of 'Stolen Protocol'.

'Stolen Protocol' was a well written dark dance track, yet on the other side of the coin, we have the fresh & funky song, 'Mocktail'.

This track comes straight after 'Stolen Protocol' and further brings the freshness of chiptune through the heavy use of, melodic bass as well as wonderfully spat out arpeggios. Now, I don't tend to like apreggios in chiptune at the best of times, but Chrome Cobra has nailed them all perfectly, using the technique to almost mimic side chaining. Another thing I noticed, when 'Stolen Protocol' was over, a lot of energy that it brought was left in the lurch. 'Mocktail' manages to pick the energy up however, giving a further kick up the arse and the beat more of a swing. Chrome Cobra's melodies & leads also give a helping hand further on during 'Mocktail', by pushing the track heavily onwards and harmonising fantastically.

'Mobile Swarming' is a great album which easily shows you how to a chiptune album using just gameboy, packed with LSDJ. His approach to chiptune reminds me of Auracles music style; both are different, however they each just use one gameboy to its full potential.
